6 Month Well Visit

What a blessing to have a healthy child!  Truitt is weighing in at 16lbs 8oz (30 something percentile for EBF boys) and is a long 27.75inches!  The doctor showed me his growth pattern on the charts and it is a beautiful curve doing just what it should be!  He told me he is definitely "long and lean" but there is nothing wrong with that.

Here's our visit in bullet form:
*Teeth-  Dr L doesn't see any teeth near the gums so he doesn't expect any anytime soon but said that one could suddenly pop up anyway. He said that we SHOULD NOT use oragel OR any natural pain relief that has belladonna (it's an opiate derviative!) so to try cold wet washcloths and tylenol if he shows discomfort.  On average the first tooth comes in between 6 and 15 months so we're just fine.  I personally am in no hurry whatsoever for teeth!

*Solids-   At this stage Dr L said to offer him solids twice a day- if he doesn't want them it's no big deal.  He should still be getting smooth purees but there is no problem if he wants to eat bites of mushy foods.  Once he is able to bring his pointer and middle finger to his thumb then he is ready to begin more self feeding and try puffs/cereal/noodles etc that he can pick up and bring to his mouth.  At meal time he said to always offer a sippy cup of ice water so it is there if he wants it but at this stage if he doesn't want it that is ok because there is plenty of water in breastmilk.  I asked about constipation and he said this is a normal part of adding solids but to watch it.  He should be going every other day and if not to try juice and if juice isn't working to evaluate which foods make him go and which stop him up.

*Sleep-  He said IF I'm ready to get him out of our bed (I asked because waking every 2 hours is really starting to wear on me) that the most important first step is to get him to be able to fall asleep in his crib and start there each night.  Once we are able to accomplish this we can work on getting him to sleep through the night later on (he said his daugther was in their bed from about 2-8am until she was 13 months so he's definitely a pro co-sleeper!).  I told him I wanted to write down his modified Ferber method but he told me I will be able to figure out what works best for us and should go with that.  He SUGGUESTED that I get him ready for bed, nurse, rock, whatever and then lay him down awake.  Most likely he will scream and I am to leave the room for 2-5 minutes and then come back.  I should pick him up and calm him and then lay him back down.  If he screams again, leave the room and this time come back after 5 minutes and sit on the floor with my back to him without saying anything or touching him.  If he continues to scream I leave (and come back and then lay on the floor not facing him) but if he calms then I stay sitting on the floor until he is asleep.  He said this way works because it associates screaming with me leaving but being calm means I stay in his room.  Right now our biggest problem is when he gets to the "light sleep" stage he stirs and uses nursing to soothe him back to sleep which means every 2-3 hours when he gets to that stage of sleep he wakes me up...

*Screaming-Truitt has never gotten over screaming when you put him in the carseat. Dr L said that he's just letting us know that he is not happy about it and the best way he can communicate that is by screaming and crying.  I also told him about how when he wakes from a nap he will scream and then start crying... he said that he's too early to be having night terrors and since it's almost every nap it's most likely just him being a grumpy bear that wants to sleep a little longer!

*Penis Problems-  Truitt was born with hydroceles.  His scrotum was HUGE but we thought it was getting better.  Evidently the problem is still there but they look smaller because everything else has gotten much bigger.  He said that the majority of the time the hydroceles are still present at 6 months but most of the time it resolves itself by the time baby is 1 year old.  Every visit he checks him for a hernia and so far, so good.  IF they don't go down by 1 year then he will have to have surgery to drain the excess fulid.  Also, he has developed an adhesion.  The head of the penis and top of the shaft have grown together.  Because of the hydroceles and a "fat pad" between his belly and groin, his penis looks sucked in so we had been pushing that back daily but evidently we should have also been pushing the skin from the shaft away from the head too. No one ever told us.  Of course I googled it and it happens a lot but I'm still beating myself up over it.  He told me to gently pull on it once a day and if it isn't seperated by our 9 month visit he will do an in-office procedure to fix it :(  I read that most of the time it will also resolve itself by 5 years old BUT if it doesn't the procedure then is a big to-do whereas if we act now it isn't.

So... I think that's all!  Dr L was very impressed with his development and of course that makes me one proud momma!  Truitt LOVED his oral vaccine and didn't want to give the nurse the dispensor back and then he screamed, held his breath, and turned bright red during his two shots but immediately stopped when I scooped him up (I didn't cry this time!) and even grinned at the nurse that had just poked him!Truitt started to get a fever and has been extra clingy and fussy today. Yucky shots.  Oh! At 9 months there are NO SHOTS, just a finger prick to check iron.  Yaaay!

Height: 27.75in
Head Circumference: 17.25in
Size 3 diapers/ Medium Tuck&Go, Size 2 Weehuggers, Size 2 Thirsties Duo
3-6 month clothing

6 months... Half of a year? How are we already here? Growing up I know that time always seems to go by more quickly the older you are so does that mean Truitt is going to grow up even faster?!? Where'd my tiny (screaming) newborn go? Today when I heard "You Are My Sunshine" on the pandora radio my eyes welled up. My baby is growing too fast!

Having said all of that I am LOVING this stage! He is so interested in the world around him and it is such a joy to watch him discover everything! Truitt thinks the dogs are hysterical and laughs at them all of the time; if only they thought the same of him. He smiles and laughs at them and if they sit or lay down next to him he's on a race to get them! He still isn't technically crawling but he moves fast and can get far! I guess it's most like an inch worm- he gets up on hands and knees (or hands and feet) and lunges forward and then gets right back up and goes again until he gets where he wants to be. He started sitting on his own (propped up by his arms) on 5/30 and then without his arms supporting him on 6/19. He also can stand on his own while holding onto something for support. He loves his walker and can move forward and backward quite quickly! He can also ALMOST get to sitting from being on his belly and often goes from sitting to "crawling."

We started solids a few weeks ago and Truitt has had fresh banana, avocado, peaches, watermelon, apples and puréed steamed apples, prunes, and cooked green beans. The first go around with applesauce wasn't much of a success but he hasn't minded them since! He prefers whole to purée and tries to feed himself. This morning we tried store bought (Plum organic's pouch)prunes because he was having potty problems and he gobbled them up! He will also grab for our food and drink so we have to be careful! Truitt is nursing on demand and eats about every 2-3 hours during the day and every 2-4 hours at night. If we are out and about he is too distracted to nurse because he's so interested in the world around him. T will still only take about an ounce of momma's milk from a bottle at a time but has started taking a little from a sippy cup. He LOVES drinking water from a water bottle though and will put his lips around the bottle and lap the water up with his tounge like a dog! Last week he had his first taste of juice (diluted apple pear) thanks to that awful constipation brought on by starting solids.

Truitt laughs all of the time and is such a silly boy. He often greats strangers with a huge smile and loves to be tickled! He enjoys his toys but still gets bored with them after a few minutes. He will NOT play in his entertainer/walker/on the floor unless you are in arms reach and will tell you've is not wanting to be alone by pitching a fit. He will then calm back down as soon as you're next to him. Truitt hasn't shown any "stranger danger" reactions yet but his momma can calm him much more quickly than anyone else!  He still doesn't quite reach for you but he will extended his hands out some.

We are still cosleeping and for the most part he will only get a good nap if he's being held. He has napped a handful of times in his crib but normally wakes after 20 minutes and is more cranky than he was before. On a typical day Truitt wake up between 6&7 and is ready for a nap around 8,12,2 and 6. He then is ready for bed about 9. We have tried eliminating some naps to get him to sleep earlier and all that does is make him more fussy and he wakes even more often over night! We MAY visit sleep training once we get back from vactioning at the end of July.

Truitt still loves bath time and has started trying to eat the bubbles. He is definitely a water baby too! We set up a pool to help deal with this 100* Texas heat and T kicks his legs happily once his toes touch the water! He enjoys doing anything outside.  We try to have nakie time on a blanket in the backyard every morning and he always moves off of the blanket (queen sized sheet) and tries to eat the grass! He loves his swing too and he and daddy normally go and swing in the evening while I'm getting some housework done.

He is also a very vocal little boy! He screeches and screams to get your attention and mimicks the sounds he heard. When he's upset he moans "mmmmum mum mummmm" and if he's mad he scream "da da da daaa!"

Every day we share with our sweet boy is such a blessing! I love you so much Truitt Ray!

(Truitt goes for his well visit tomorrow at 8:30. I am curious to see his weight-at my grandma's her scale put him at 18.0 a few weeks ago but our scale today said 15.8. I will update his stats and share my dr questions as soon as I can!)

6 Month Must Haves

Catbird Baby Pikkolo
Photobucket
We LOVE babywearing!  I had our "crotch dangler" but as Truitt has gotten bigger it was no longer comfortable for either of us.  After trying out the Ergo, Boba, and a MeiTai (also by Catbird Baby) I decided on the Pikkolo.  You can carry (up to 35lbs) on your back, hip or chest and the buckles allow the carrier to come on and off quickly. We LOVE it!!!!

Homemade stretchy wrap
Photobucket
My duedate buddy made me this.  It's 50/50 cotton poly blend and it's supportive while still cool and breathable!  This is FANTASTIC for when we're shopping and going in and out of the car.  I'm able to wrap it once and then take him in and out while not having to take the carrier off.  Truitt doesn't seem to have a preference and I love both carriers for different reasons!
BabyTrend Walker
Photobucket
Truitt has two! One for his Memaw and Pops house and one for our house.  He prefers theirs because it has two awesome giraffes he can chew on and the one at our house was a hand-me-down and doesn't have any cool toys on it.  At first he was only able to go backwards but now he can go forwards and he goes FAST!  He loves his new found independence!!!

VTech Spin and Learn
Photobucket
E told me that Truitt said he wanted this toy... so we got it and E was right! T loooves it.  We have the song memorized and it gets slightly annoying but T loves it and makes the animals move and make their noises.  We also had $10 off so it was super cheap! He's gotten to wear it will also stop a fit as soon as he hears "Take a spin around the sea, make new friends feel the breeze...."

Little Tikes 2-in-1 Snug and Secure Swing

Truitt LOVES being outside and he enjoys his swing so much!  This is the longest he will sit and stay happy in anything!

Adventures in Applesauce

This video makes me laugh every time I watch it.  Truitt does NOT like applesauce.  I 'm pretty sure it's the texture becuase he loved the raw apple but this is what happened when he tasted the applesauce...

Anyway, despite the epic fail of him liking it- I LOVED making it!  I made 20oz for less than $3.

I bought 6 Red Delicious (because they were the cheapest) apples and then washed, peeled and cubed them.
Photobucket

We have a rice cooker/steamer that we NEVER use so I pulled it out and filled it with 6 cups of water and placed the apple cubes in and then they steamed for about 30 minutes.  (Also, I couldn't find a steamer basket at walmart!?)
Photobucket

Once they were tender I transfered them to the blender and added about 1/2cup of the steaming liquid (which was pink!) and blended until I got the right consistency.  I debated if I should use breastmilk but I read that while steaming is the cooking method that retains the most nutrients, if you use the steamed liquid to thin the food you're adding what was lost back in.

I then spooned the applesauce into an icecube tray after it had cooled about 15 minutes in the blender.  I went to walk it to the fridge (3 ft away) AND DROPPED IT ON THE FLOOR!  Luckily it landed right side up so while applesauce flew everywhere I didn't waste too much.  After it was in the fridge a few hours I transferred to the freezer over night.

After it was frozen, I popped the apple cubes out and placed them in a freezer bag labeled and dated.  They are approximately 1oz servings and will keep for a month.  So whenever we want to try applesauce again I just grab one or two cubes out of the freezer, thaw and eat! Yaaaay!

This was SUPER easy and it is so nice knowing exactly what T is eating!

Yum!!!!

I have said that we were going to wait until 6 months until introducing solids to Truitt.  The reason I decided this is because breastmilk (or formula) provides all that most babies need for at least 6 months-sometimes closer to a year; a baby's stomach is quite immature until around 6 months and not capable of properly digesting; the early introduction of solids has shown to lead to a SIXFOLD chance of childhood obesity; and early introduction of solids has been proven to cause a higher occurance of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Chrone's Disease, and other GI problems later in life.  I have heard "well I fed my baby mashed potatoes when they were 3 months old and they turned out just fine" so many times and while yes they are just fine, maybe (or maybe not!) that's why they have IBS and gallbladder disease as an adult?  Yes, I know that there are TONS of causes of these problems but if I can reduce or eliminate just one of the causes I think I'm doing something good.

T also wasn't ready for cereal when I gave into everyone's comments and tried it at 18 weeks (4.5months) old.  Granted, I know every baby is a messy eater but the difference in trying to spoon feed him then, and then trying again in 2 weeks and then finally when he was ready for it 1 week after that at 5 months old was remarkable!  Babies have limited resources to protect themselves but I strongly believe that the tounge-thrust reflex is one of those.  I feel like once THEY are ready then it is obvious because of what we saw with our cereal experience.

Anyway, having said all of that, Truitt started showing signs that he was really ready for food around 5 months.  He intensly watched E and me eat and would pull our hands to his mouth.  His tounge thrust reflex was gone and he tried to steal our food and silverware.  SO, I broke my 6 month rule and we started BANANA on the 12th at 5.5 months, a few days shy of 24 weeks.  Truitt L.O.V.E.D it! We started by just letting him taste mine.  The tasting turned into him eating 1/2 of a small banana! He prefers it whole but as it gets too mushy (and a choking hazard) I put it in a bowl and mash it up with breastmilk and then spoon feed him.

Photobucket

We stuck with banana once a day for 7 days to make sure he handled it well and he did.  Diapers though- EW! I sure miss his breastmilk poop! Thank goodness the naner poops have only happened in disposables but I know it's going to happen in cloth sooner or later!

Yesterday we tried avocado! At first he wasn't too sure of it but quickly decided that he liked it and ate 1/4 of an avocado mashed (without breastmilk).

We will continue with just banana and avocado for 4 days and then add apple.  I am planning on buying a mesh feeder and putting raw apple in it and then making applesauce to feed him by spoon.  After apple we will do green beans and then either peaches, pears or sweet potatoes!  This time is so much fun but it definitely is a little sad that he is growing up so fast!

He still nurses a LOT and isn't fond of bottles.  He nurses on demand every 2-4 hours during the day-much more like every 2 but if we're out then he's too distracted to eat. He still wakes about 3-6- closer to 6- times a night to nurse althought most of it is probably for comfort and not hunger.  We have tried a sippy cup with water in it (didn't want to waste pumped milk if he didn't like it) and he just bit the spout and spit out the water!

We chose our foods based on http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/ and I still intend on making all of his babyfood!

Photo Dump

I know I have been really slacking in the "real post" area- you know something other than pictures or videos BUT after E gets home from a long day of work he needs some down time (without T) and it's hard to find the time to sit at the computer when I have a very attention demanding little guy.  I cannot believe there are babies that will entertain themselves on the floor/in a walker/playing in their entertainer.  Even if Truitt is surrounded by toys we still have to be right there talking to him or he flips his lid!!! I promise I'll have a more in depth post soon- even if it's not until his 6 month (OMG MY BABY IS GOING TO BE 1/2 A YEAR OLD IN 2 WEEKS!) update! I've been trying to do this post for a week but as soon as I get going something else comes up.  I promise I'm still reading your blogs even if I'm not commenting!!!

Here's what we have been up to!

Sweet Balding Boy!

As you recall, Truitt was born with a head full of dark brown hair!  The entire time I was pregnant I figured he would come out bald or with red hair since E's so light headed and I have dark hair but he surprised us all with all of that dark hair!

Photobucket

Everyone told me he'd rub bald spots but since he was demanding to always be held he didn't get the typical spot where his head rubbed against the bed but even at a month old he still had a ton of hair and no bald spots!

Photobucket

At 2 months his hair started to thin a little but we always got comments on how much he had!
Photobucket

But he did start to lose it in the back some.
Photobucket

At 3 months it REALLY started falling out
Photobucket

And by 4 months he had more bald spots than hairy spots
Photobucket

But in the past month or so he's gone basically bald! He has some crazy long hairs left and they're reddish!
All of the new growth is blonde!!!
